Mr. O27 - The Extra in a Tuxedo
Limited edition of 700 copies.
The first 150 orders for Monsieur 027 will include an original print based on a photogram from the book.
For more than ten years, author Christophe Bier tracked down the appearances of a mysterious, anonymous extra in several hundred films from the 1930s to the 1970s.
At the edge of the frame, in the background, in a blurry close-up… Monsieur 027* is everywhere: through nearly 600 film stills and promotional photos—a veritable treasure hunt across hundreds of films spanning nearly forty years—this comprehensive volume traces the cinematic journey of this illustrious unknown and his role as a multifaceted extra.
This almost obsessive collection of images is accompanied by a scholarly and in-depth critical analysis, followed by a comprehensive investigation and analysis spanning over 200 pages that explores the life and career of Monsieur 027.
This book offers a powerful testament to a golden age of French cinema through one of its most prolific anonymous actors.
* The name “Monsieur 027” was given to this extra by the author during his research, serving as a sort of identification number to refer to this anonymous, uncredited actor throughout the book.
The Author
For twenty years, he was a columnist and reporter on France Culture’s program *Mauvais Genres*, where he celebrated the creators on the fringes—pulp novelists, B-movie starlets, and *graphzine* artists— Christophe Bier demonstrated his penchant for editorial challenges by publishing, after twelve years of research, a Dictionary of French Erotic and Pornographic Cinema (16 and 35 mm), a thousand pages of scholarship, without a single illustration. More recently, he has become fascinated by the Select-Bibliothèque, one of the most bizarre imprints in interwar fetishist literature: L’Obsession du Matto-Grosso is an autobiographical essay on this passion and, at the same time, an investigation revealing the identity of a publisher whom an abundance of pseudonyms had rendered elusive.
